Racialization of the Street Gang Issue in Montréal: A Police Perspective
|
Abstract |
An examination of the work of the SPCUM as it tackles the on-going street gang issue in Montreal. The author analyzes the “racialization” process and the significance of ethnicity for understanding street gang culture. The SPCUM identifies five “ethnic groups” from which street gangs originate: Jamaican, Haitian, Asiatic, Latino and extreme right. “Extreme right” in this context denotes Caucasians (either Anglophone or Francophone).
