Title
Cultural Transformation in Montreal Since 1970
Abstract
The author points out that Montreal is the cultural and economic capital of Quebec's French-speaking population, but is also the place where the vast majority of English Quebecers live and the nearly exclusive destination in the province for immigrants from abroad. As Quebec's only multicultural community, the author argues that Montreal is also the site of the province's strongest and most rapid cultural changes. Among the most significant political events that took place between 1970 and 1985 that impacted cultural change, according to the author, were the linguistic legislation, the restructuration of public schools, the election of the Parti Quebecois in 1976 and the referendum on sovereignty-association in 1980. He also argues that the very fabric of Montreal was altered through the introduction of housing renovation programs and the construction of new dwellings during this period. All this transformed the city's cultural urban landscape.
