Abstract
An account of the development of theatricals in English Canada from the beginnings of amateur and touring companies to the building of Canada's first commercial theatre house (Theatre Royal) in Montreal in 1825. Montreal entrepreneur and brewer John Molson (1763-1836) built the one thousand-seat theatre for $30,000; it was demolished in 1844 to make way for the Bonsecours Market.
