L’île de Montréal : les francophones quittent; le français reste !
Abstract
The author challenges the predicted 'catastrophe' of the exodus of mother-tongue Francophones from the island of Montreal leading to the 'minorisation' of French and the ascendancy of English speakers. However, the author points out that although mother-tongue Francophones have been moving to off-island suburbs, the number of Allophones who have adopted French as the language outside the home has bolstered the French presence in Montreal. The author concludes that the strong support for the Francophone community among Allophones serves to camouflage the low anglicization of the Francophone group itself.
