Fête et société : le carnaval d'hiver à Montréal (1883-1889)
Abstract
The winter carnival, a new form of public entertainment which appeared in Montreal towards the end of the nineteenth century, was mainly organized and financed by English-speaking Montreal athletic and business interests. The idea to hold a winter carnival in Montreal was first proposed by R.D. McGibbon, a member of the Montreal Snowshoe Club, 1882. The Montreal Star was the principal supporter of this project. The aim of the carnival was to boost the city's economic activity during the off season by attracting tourists and by making these visitors aware of the city's commercial and industrial potential. The author includes information on the social and ethnic conflict which developed over the general exclusion of Francophones from the carnival organization.
