Abstract |
Alternately a Royal Redoubt (1712-1808), a common jail (1813-1868), an Anglophone (Presbyterian-run) College (1868-1902), home of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and now the cultural centre and library of the English-speaking community, the authors point out that the Morrin Centre is the heart of the story Quebec City. This old building reflects the turbulent history of the capital, marking the passage of the French regime to the British Regime. Chapters include: "Prison Reform and Prison Society: The Quebec Gaol, 1812-1867" by Donald Fyson; "A Presbyterian Stronghold in Catholic Quebec: Morrin College (Since 1862)" by Patrick Donovan; and "Moose in Flames: The Story of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec" by Louisa Blair.
