Title
Évolution de l'autonomie des commissaires d'école de la Province de Québec de 1846 à 1967
Abstract
A study of the role, function and powers of the school commissioners in Quebec between the years 1846 and 1967. The author points out that there were two opposing trends until 1961: on the one hand government gradually diminished the autonomy of the commissioners in their relations with teachers and in the field of pedagogy, but on the other hand it increased commissioners powers in the financial field. However, after 1961, government greatly diminished commissioners financial autonomy. In summary, the author notes that school commissioners are less free today than in 1846, but their general responsibilities are greater.
