Languages in Contact: An Ethnographic Study of Interaction in an Immersion School
|
Abstract |
Over a one-year period in the 1980s, the authors studied the staff interaction of an early French immersion program in a Montreal school. Staff at the school were made-up of French-speaking and English-speaking teachers. The authors found that the teachers used two main interaction strategies to minimize interpersonal conflict and maintain a semblance of professional harmony: 1) avoidance of social interaction; and 2) the predominant use of English in cross-group communication. The irony of how the staff interacted compared to the objectives of immersion school programs did not escape the authors' notice.
