Push-Pull Factors Related to Student Retention and Integration in Québec
Abstract
The author set out to identify the principal factors that drive English-speaking youth to remain in or leave Quebec upon the completion of their university education. He examined English-speaking students’ initial motivation for studying and living in Quebec, what kind of support they obtained both upon arrival and across their period of study, and the conditions that might motivate them to remain in the province upon the completion of their studies. The survey was with 445 English-speaking students, thirty-five percent born in Quebec, twenty-five born in the rest of Canada, and thirty-eight percent born outside of Canada, who attended either McGill, Concordia or Bishop's universities. The students were generally satisfied with their university learning and community living experiences, but least satisfied with the availability and accessibility of English-language support services in their city (Montreal or Sherbrooke). Most Quebec-born students indicated they will likely stay in Quebec, but one in five of these Quebecers said they will leave.
