Teaching the History of Architecture at McGill, 1896-1903
Abstract
In 1896, a Department of Architecture in McGill University's Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering) was established to provide a professional studies program in architecture. That year, Stewart Henbest Capper (1859-1925) was appointed Macdonald Professor of Architecture to head McGill's new architectural program. In 1899, the university graduated its first students in architecture, George Taylor Hyde and Norman M. McLeod. Stewart Henbest Capper remained Director of McGill's School of Architecture until 1903.
