Abstract
The authors explore how operating rooms in hospitals became more like laboratories by studying the relationship between architecture and surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital between 1893 and 1956. The authors analyze the transformation of operating rooms within the contexts of the history of surgery, the relationship between patients and surgeons, and the self-image and status of surgeons using a material culture that reflects a change in attitude as well as physical design.
