Abstract
In 2008, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts acquired the Sherbrooke Street Erskine and American United Church as a new pavilion dedicated to Canadian and Quebec art, as well as a concert hall. Constructed in 1893-1894 to the designs of Montreal architect Alexander Cowper Hutchinson (1838-1922) as the Erskine Presbyterian Church, the richly textured exterior is an example of the Romanesque Revival style of architecture. The interior is an example of a nineteenth-century amphitheatre plan altered in 1938-39 by architect Percy Erskine Nobbs (1875-1964) to reflect the new values of the United Church. The Church was closed to worship in 2004.
