Abstract
Percy Erskine Nobbs (1875-1964) came to Canada from Scotland in 1903 to be the second MacDonald Professor of Architecture and Director of the Department of Architecture at McGill University. He continued as Director until 1910, and as professor of Design until 1940. From 1910 to 1945 he practised as a partner of George T. Hyde, a graduate of McGill's Department of Architecture. In addition to designs commissioned by McGill, the firm of Nobbs and Hyde undertook the design of school buildings for the Montreal Protestant School Board; the plan and first academic buildings of the University of Alberta; the Montreal offices of the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company; shops and office buildings for Henry Birks and Sons; several clubs; church interiors; and numerous houses, both individual and in groups for rich men and for artisans. During the Depression, Nobbs served as co-chairman of the Montreal Slum Clearance and Rehousing Committee.
