Abstract
The author outlines the establishment and organization of the Montreal River Police, established in the early nineteenth century to protect merchants and shippers from the violence which was becoming common on Montreal's waterfront. The force discharged many of the duties later performed by the Montreal Harbour Police, founded in 1913.
