Abstract
The Montreal Society of Artists, the city's first professional artists' association, held the first fine arts exhibition in the city in 1847. The Society evolved into the Art Association of Montreal, which in turn evolved into the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The original seven members of the Society were: Andrew Morris, James Duncan (1805-1881), Robert T. Howden, Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), William F. Wilson, Martin Somerville (1796 or 1797-1856), and William Sawyer (1820-1889).
