La socialisation langagière comme processus dynamique : suivi d'une cohorte de jeunes plurilingues intégrant le marché du travail
Abstract
The authors followed the daily trajectories of fifteen young multilingual adults of immigrant background across the city of Montreal to examine their language practices, their integration into Quebec, and their representations of Montreal, its territorialization, and its ethnolinguistic boundaries. These young people, most of whom were still in school (CEGEP and university) in 2012 when they participated in this project, also described their language biography and their family immigration trajectory, as well as their future plans and and their career plans. The authors conclude that while this cohort of participants is far from representative, the biographical accounts and life trajectories of these young people opens a window on the daily experience of a new generation of Quebecers and Montrealers of immigrant background, for whom French is simply a linguistic resource for these plurilingual individuals. The authors research also highlights the importance of taking into account places of language socialization other than the home. They point out the pitfalls of any analysis that considers the home language or the mother tongue as the main indicators of the vitality of the French language in Quebec.
