Title
Career Aspirations of Young Women in Single-Sex Educational Institutions
Abstract
The author surveyed the career aspirations of 123 female secondary school students attending three English-language private, single-sex educational institutions in Montreal, circa mid-1980s. She found that nearly 100 percent of the students responded that they intended to pursue post-secondary education; of these, the majority intended to obtain an undergraduate degree, and close to sixty percent intended to pursue graduate studies. Seventy two percent of the girls indicated a desire to pursue traditionally male-dominated careers (chartered accounts, engineers, computer analysts, business executives, and lawyers). The three schools surveyed were: Queen of Angels Academy, The Study, and Trafalgar.
