Title |
Garrison and Amateur Theatricals in Quebec City and Kingston During the British Regime
|
Abstract |
The author examines the public involvement of the British garrisons in local theatrical activity during the British regime in Canada. Her chronological study of theatre, by both garrison and civilian amateurs, traces the relationship between political imperial policy and cultural colonial development. She explains that public theatrical activity in two culturally distinct milieux, Quebec City and Kingston, demonstrates a consistent imperial policy. The author's study emphasizes the public activity as distinct from private theatricals staged in barracks, in homes, or as exclusive social evenings. Performances which were meant to attract a general audience and were advertised in the newspapers reflect the public profile of the garrison.
