Title
'People didn’t call it klezmer': Klezmer Music in Jewish Montreal 1924-1970
Abstract
The author points out that while academics have contributed significantly to the documentation and the study of klezmer music from its beginnings to the present, these studies address exclusively American and European models. She notes that although klezmer music is closely associated to the Yiddish language and culture, it is a topic that has been neglected by present scholars in the field of Canadian Yiddish and Jewish studies. She argues that this dearth of research has led many to assume that since no critical evidence has been documented, Canadian klezmorim of the early twentieth century are non-existent. The author sets out to disprove these misconceptions while conveying a particular Canadian klezmorim experience that was heavily influenced by Eastern European modes of thinking, musical transmission, performance, repertoire and status within the community.
