Abstract
The role played by the Montreal-born poet Arthur James Marshall Smith (1902-1980) in the development of a distinctive Canadian literary culture. Smith was a member of the 1920s McGill University-centered "Montreal Group" of modernist poets that included Leon Edel, Leo Kennedy, A. M. Klein, John Glassco, and F. R. Scott. The author traces the thematic development of Smith's critical position and personal circumstances. She lists chronological bibliographies of all of Smith's poetry and prose publications.
