'She must not stir out of a darkened room': The Redpath Mansion Mystery
Abstract
An examination of the private life of a prominent turn-of-the-twentieth century Montreal family as revealed in the sudden glare of publicity generated by a violent double shooting. On June 13, 1901, Ada Maria Mills Redpath (1842-1901) and her son Clifford (1876-1901), members of one of the wealthiest families of the day, were shot dead in their Montreal mansion. The authors examine how Amy Redpath (1868-1954), daughter and sister of the two murdered people, deployed architecture (the Redpath mansion) in the interplay of inter-connected social relationships, behaviour and bourgeois respectability following the deaths.
