The Rise and Fall of the Railway System in the Chateauguay Valley
Abstract
The Montreal and Champlain Junction Railway was the first company to operate steam-powered trains in the Chateauguay Valley. Starting in 1883, it provided service between Huntingdon and Montreal. Later in the 1880s, the Canada Atlantic Railway (from Valleyfield through Howick Junction to Aubrey and Lacolle) and the Beauharnois Junction Railway(from Beauharnois to Ste-Martine) were built. In the 1892, the New York Central Railroad operated a newly-built line connecting Malone, NY, with Valleyfield and Montreal. Many of these small lines were eventually acquired by the Grand Trunk Railway.
