Title
Les biens de Saint-Sulpice et "The Attorney General Stuart's Opinion Respecting The Seminary of Montreal" (10 décembre 1828) - essai critique
Abstract
Includes a copy (in English) of Attorney General James Stuart's 1828 legal opinion arguing that the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice, the seigneurs of most of the Island of Montreal, had no legal existence and hence no right to its property. Stuart (1780-1853) argued the seigneury belonged to the Crown. The author claims that opinion was instigated by Montreal's Anglophone merchant class.
