Abstract
The history of the Valleyfield Canning Company, founded by M. David McMeekin in 1913, originally under the name Huntingdon Canning. In 1919 the name was changed to Valleyfield Canning Company. The author outlines the evolution of the company, including a strike for higher wages by child employees at the cannery in 1936. Some of the children, as young as 10-years old, were earning $0.50 a day for ten hours work. The McMeekin family owned the company until the 1970s.
