The Big Ladies’ Hotel : Gender, Residence and Middle-Class Montreal : A Contextual Analysis of the Royal Victoria College, 1899-1931
|
Abstract |
An analysis of the architecture of the Royal Victoria College, a purpose-built women’s residential college of McGill University. The college was designed by architect Bruce Price and built between 1896 and 1899; its first extension was designed by Percy Nobbs and built between 1930-1931. The author argues that the Royal Victoria College reveals the gender significance of the building’s relationship to its affiliate institution (McGill University), to an urban geography (Phillips Square), and to commercial typology (the railway hotel). She concludes that the building helped to contest the turn-of-the-twentieth century “separate spheres” rhetoric argued by some men.
