Abstract
The authors discuss the evolution of the currency and banking systems in Canada, from the passage of the Constitution Act of 1791 to the founding of the Bank of Montreal in 1817. They also discuss the importance of the concepts of Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), the founder of the United States financial system, on the establishment of a commercial banking system in Canada.
