Title
Temperance, Evangelism, Drink, Religion and Reform in the Province of Canada, 1840-1854
Abstract
The author points out that between 1840 and 1850 over one-third of the inhabitants of the Province of Canada (Canada East and Canada West) pledged to abstain from all intoxicating drink. The author examines the spread of temperance as an evangelical movement as well as one of the most enduring reform movements in Canada. The primary sources used by the author were two Montreal-based newspapers -- The Canada Temperance Advocate, the organ of the Montreal Temperance Society, and Les Mélanges Religieux, the Montreal diocesan newspaper of the French-speaking Catholic Church.
