|
Abstract |
A review of Herbert Brown Ames’ municipal career in Montreal during the period 1892-1904. Ames (1863-1954) was a paternalist philanthropist businessman who focused on municipal political reform as the road to social reform. He believed that those with means should assume their moral and financial responsibilities towards the less fortunate. He believed in the hierarchy of classes and emphasized the importance of honest businessmen holding key positions of authority. He stressed that the key to a better society resided in the establishment of a professional, accountable and “scientific” municipal government made up of men like himself.
