Title
The Scandal Makers : The Cogniacers, Part 2
Abstract
The continued story of the nineteenth century counterfeiters who lived on a road known as Cogniac Street (today part of Chemin Hudon) in Dunham Township, Missisquoi County. "Cogniac" was an eighteenth-century slang word for fake money, and the people who lived on the Eastern Townships road were called "Cogniacers." In this episode, the author tells the story of Horace Gleason (1811-1892) and his wife, Mary Perkins, both involved in the extended Gleason family's U.S. bank notes counterfeiting operation. They are buried in the Dunham East Cemetery.
