Abstract
The author points out that the Bank of Montreal was formed in 1817 with capital stock worth 250,000 pounds sterling under "articles of association" by nine men who represented a cross section of the city's business and financial elite in the early nineteenth century. Five of these Montrealers were born in Scotland, two in the United States, one in England and one was a French Canadian. The bank received its formal charter in 1822.
