Abstract
The Scottish-born fur trader Simon McTavish (1750-1804) began his career in New York but moved his business to Montreal in 1776. He was one of the founders in 1779 of the Montreal-based North West Company. McTavish's elegance, personality, and cleverness earned him the nickname "the Marquis" from his contemporaries.
