Abstract
In 1822 a group of about fifty merchants founded the Montreal Board of Trade to promote the development of Montreal. The Board promoted the dredging of the St. Lawrence and the construction of the city's port facilities (1857), and founded the Port Warden's Office and the Corn Exchange (1863).
