Abstract
Hugh Graham (1848-1938) founded the Montreal Star in 1869. The paper was among the earliest in Canada to eschew an affiliation with a specific political party or religious denomination. The Star's early populist approach was aimed at women, workers, immigrants (especially the Irish), and sports enthusiasts. However, Graham had close ties to the Conservative Party and eventually the paper supported that party. In 1925 Graham sold the paper to John McConnell. The paper ceased publication in 1979.
