Abstract
The social and economic impact of "intemperance" in Montreal in the 1850s. The booklet claims that there were 6881 cases before the courts in 1859, most relating to the abuse of alcohol. Police costs for that year was $35,404. Revenue to the city for licences for innkeepers and grocers (who sold alcohol) was $13,326.
