Abstract
An architectural/social history of the essentially British origins of Montreal's duplex housing which eventually led to the multi-family housing style which dominated construction by 1880. The author studies the participation of French Canadians in housing development and the role of English-speaking builders. He also notes the absence of the Irish in this activity.
