Title
La bibliothèque publique et la salle d’opéra Haskell
Abstract
The Haskell Free Library and Opera House straddles the Canada-United States border in Derby Line, Vermont and Rock Island (now part of Stanstead) in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Construction of the building began in 1901, and the opera house opened in 1904 and the library in 1905. The front door of the building is in the United States, but the books and opera stage are in Canada. The check-out counter for the library is in the United States. Americans like to say that it is the only library in their country without any books, and the only opera house without a stage. The building was a gift from Mrs. Martha Stewart Haskell and her son Col. Horace "Stewart" Haskell. It was built in memory of her parents Catherine and Horace Stewart and her husband Carlos Freeman Haskell.
