Title
Le conflit linguistique de Saint-Léonard
Abstract
Newspaper clippings of the language conflict that pitted Italian parents and Anglophones against Québécois nationalists between 1967 and 1969 in the Montreal suburb of Saint-Léonard over whether immigrant parents should have the right to decide which schools (English or French) their children should attend. The conflict, which turned violent at times, resulted in the Union Nationale government introducing the first language law in Quebec, Bill 63 (Loi pour promouvoir la langue française au Québec), in 1969.
