Regards catholiques sur les villes québécoises‪: Une haine à géométrie variable (1918-1939)
Abstract
The author examines the discourses of Francophone Quebec Catholics in their views towards the city and the urban fact during the interwar period. The time frame examined by the author is the period when most of the population of the province were city dwellers. The author points out that there were, on the one hand, the centrality of the case of Montreal, which alone was viewed as embodying all the defects of the urban world in the eyes of French-Canadian Catholics and, on the other hand, the way in which urbanism was associated not only with irreligion, but also with the province's English-speaking and Protestant "Others." Generally hostile, the author concludes that the speeches and writings during this period nonetheless reveal timid signs of a desire to tame or appropriate a certain urbanity.
