Class, Ethnicity and Property Transfer in Montreal, 1907-1909
Abstract
The real estate market in Montreal experienced an unprecedented boom in the years 1905 to 1913. The author charts and analyses the transfer process in Montreal in a two-year period (1907-1909) in the middle of the boom. Informed by an historical materialist perspective, he focuses on class, ethnic, and institutional dimensions of the participants in that process. The study elucidates the significant activity of real estate companies, the special participation of the working class and the petty bourgeoisie, the importance of petty commodity production and sale of real estate, and the particularly important role of the Francophones in this booming real estate market. Information is included on the real estate market in predominantly English-speaking sections of the city.
