Title
Women and Political Participation : The Montreal Citizens Movement, 1974-1989
Abstract
The Montreal Citizens Movement (MCM) was a municipal political party that existed from 1973 to 2001. Founded shortly before the 1974 municipal election, Anglophones groups and individuals comprised twenty percent (75 of 375) of the party's founding delegates. The MCM was the first municipal political party to run female candidates. The party achieved power in the city in 1986. The author examines the involvement of women in the MCM from its founding until 1986. The author examines resource mobilization, sexual division of labor and role conflict to analyze the individual determinants, structural foundations, and nature of women's participation in the party.
