Abstract
The Scottish-born Montreal businessman, politician and philanthropist Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal (1820-1914), immigrated to Canada in 1838 to work for the Hudson Bay Company, and eventually rose to be the President of the HBC's Council of the Northern Department. He later served as President of the Bank of Montreal and, with his cousin George Stephen (1829-1921), co-founded the Canadian Pacific Railway. He also served as Chancellor of McGill University from 1889 to 1914, and represented the federal riding of Montreal West in the House of Commons from 1887 to 1896. Among his philanthropic donations was money to build Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital, that opened its doors in 1893.
