Title
Changing Attitudes of Catholic and Protestant Christians to the State, as Reflected in the History of the Educational System in Quebec
Abstract
The author contends that careful examination of the history of education in Quebec up to the 1970s reveals that its bi-confessional nature and its tradition of independence from State control rested largely on two anachronisms: the Catholic hierarchy's determination, at least until Vatican II (1965), to protect their faithful from ideas generally identified as "liberal"; and the Protestant minority's determination both to avoid this protection and to use Section 93 of the British North America Act as its guarantee not of the religious rights originally specified in the 1867 Constitution, but of linguistic and cultural rights which, by 1970, it valued more highly.
