Abstract
By the late 1770s, the continuous influx of destitute Loyalist families coming to St. Johns (now St-Jean-sur-Richelieu) on the Richelieu River and Montreal became an insurmountable problem. In 1779, Governor Haldimand asked Sir John Johnson to take charge of these families, but he was fully occupied. Capt. Daniel McAlpin (d. 1780) was chosen instead to take on this responsibility. Capt. McAlpin kept lists of all the families who were entering the country.
