Awakening Continent: The Life of Lord Mount Stephen
Abstract
The first of a two volume biography of George Stephen (1829-1921), the nineteenth-century Montreal businessman, financier, and philanthropist, covering the years from his birth in Dufftown, Banffshire, Scotland, to 1891. Stephen immigrated to Montreal in 1850, and by 1870 had become one of the foremost financiers in the city. In 1871 he was appointed a director of the Bank of Montreal, and by 1876 was president of the bank. In the 1880s he became involved in the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and served as the railway's first president. By 1888, Stephen had moved to England, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
