Title
Les attitudes et la motivation au trilinguisme des étudiants allophones dans un cégep anglophone de Montréal
Abstract
The author found that trilingual Montreal Allophone CEGEP students consider French as an instrument to live in Quebec because it is important economically and socially. He also observed that these youths use English frequently, have positive attitudes towards this language, and demonstrate a high integrative and instrumental motivation to acquire it. These students found that English offers greater opportunities, socially and economically, worldwide. The heritage language is normally used within the family. The author found that apart from the communication with the parents, the use as well as attitudes and motivation to maintain a heritage language varied on an individual basis. He also found that these youth found trilingualism as a resource and showed flexibility in their language behaviour. The author concludes that considering that trilingualism is a changing condition, the students' linguistic use and their attitudes towards each language will evolve through time. A long period of residence in Canada seems to facilitate the integration of the Allophones into the host community and studying in French high school seems to support the maintenance of the heritage language.
