Title
Landownership and Access to Political Power in Lower Canada, 1791-1838
Abstract
The author argues that in the period between the enactment of the Constitution Act 1791 and the outbreak of the Rebellion of 1837, access to the Executive and Legislative Councils and the Judiciary depended largely on land ownership. He also points out that the majority of Anglophones in these power positions held their land under seigneurial tenure.
