Abstract
A study of the rise and demise of Montreal winter carnivals during the 1880s. The idea of hosting a winter carnival in the city is attributed to R.D. McGibbon, a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. Montreal carnivals ceased to exist after 1889 when businessmen no longer saw the economic advantage of these festivals.
