Title
Imperialist Intent - Colonial Response: The Art Collection and Cultural Milieu of Lord Strathcona in Nineteenth-Century Montreal
Abstract
An examination of Donald Smith's (Lord Strathcona) nineteenth century art collection in relation to the intersecting questions of imperialism, colonial relations and cultural status. According to the author, both the formation of the collection and its dispersal are linked to a dialectic of cultural hegemony and national identity in nineteenth century Canada. The author compares Lord Strathcona's collection to those of several of his peers in order to place him in his cultural milieu of English-speaking Montreal.
