Title
John Try: A Master Carpenter, Builder and Architect in Old Montreal
Abstract
The British-born John Try (1779 or 1780-1855) likely came to Montreal in 1807, and by 1815 he had achieved considerable success as a carpenter. He also prepared architectural plans, was active as an owner and developer of property, and supported a large number of charitable causes. In 1824 he quit Montreal, only to return two years later and resume his many interests. He left again in 1833 and returned in 1837. He died wealthy though somewhat forgotten in 1855, leaving behind a legacy of notable Montreal buildings and philanthropic works.
