The Institutionalization of Sport: A Case Study of Canadian Lacrosse, 1844-1914
Abstract
Montreal was the hub of organized lacrosse activity in Canada between 1844 and 1866. In 1860, Montrealer William George Beers (1841-1900) published a brochure that laid down basic rules and regulations for modern lacrosse. In 1869, he published the book Lacrosse: The National Game of Canada which outlined the historical background of the game, repeated its rules outlined in the earlier brochure, and reflected on the theory and strategy of play in various field positions.
